While it may only have a fairly small population for a country, the thriving city state of Singapore has an extremely credit card market with a number of Singapore, Asian and international institutions offering a range of cards such as the HSBC Gold Card.  It’s hard to get around Singapore without exposure to credit card offers, there are posters and promotions everywhere and many of the major stores or restaurants have alliances with certain card issuers.

When looking for a Singapore credit card, here are some of the key things to understand;

Rates/APR: While the market is competitive it differs significantly from markets such as Europe and the USA where interest rates (APR) play a big factor in decision making. In Singapore the default purchase rate is offered at the same 24% APR on the vast majority of cards. This means there is often little to compare when it comes to purchase rates but you should check what the grace period is (if any) from when you purchase goods to when interest starts getting charged. Because the rate of 24% is high it makes using credit cards an expensive way to fund purchases unless you plan on paying the debt off in full each month.

Annual Fees: Singapore credit cards have a nominal annual fee but it is normal for this to be waived for a number of years to new card holders. Before you apply make sure you know how many years fee waiver the card provides and make a note of what the annual fee will be once the waiver ends. If you move cards every few years or speak to your card issuer you may be able to avoid paying fees on many cards.

Rewards: Rewards are key to credit card offers in Singapore and finding the best credit card is all about finding a card that offers the best rewards to suit your spending pattern and lifestyle. While you can certainly find cards offering the standard reward schemes such as frequent flyer points in Singapore it is common to get access to special offers and rebates at restaurants, clubs and partner retailers across Singapore. Premium cards such as Platinum credit cards normally offer special privileges such as extra service or access at Singapore venues or travel and product insurances.

While in other countries a rewards scheme may be something tacked on to a credit card, in Singapore the rewards and privilages are the key point of difference for most cards.

Funds Transfer: Finally, one more thing to check if you have outstanding debt on other credit cards is if they allow a credit card funds transfer where you move the balance of other cards to your new card at a lower APR. It’s not a standard feature with all cards but as the market gets more competitive it is becoming more normal.

Applying for a credit card can be done quickly and easily online with most banks although many will require some extra information before they will approve and send out your credit card. If you are not a Singapore citizen then you can still apply for most cards but you will find the lending criteria is a little stricter.

Credit card rebates offer a convenient way to get cash back on purchases made through your credit card. Make sure you compare credit cards offering rewards and rebates programs before you apply to find a product that will benefit you the most.

Cash back offers

One of the most popular forms of credit card rewards is the cash back scheme. In this scheme, once you make a purchase, you get a certain percentage of the purchase as a cash back. You can check the fine print of the offer document provided by the credit card company to see the exact percentage of cash back offered.

Best places to utilize cash backs
The best places to use up such credit card rebates would be in the gas stations, grocery stores, drugstores etc.. The contract of the credit card would clearly state, which particular stores you could use the credit card in, to get your credit card rebates. If you are a regular shopper, then using the credit card for such shopping trips can help you accumulate more rebates faster.

Limits in place
If you thought you could earn massive amounts of credit card rebates in a short time you are wrong. Some cards provide a set rebate for all transactions on the card while many only give discounts at certain retail locations. If you are a high spending and are faced with these limits it makes it difficult to get a good return from the card. There may also be a limit for rebate earned. Once you exceed this limit you will no longer be earning anymore rebate.

Annual fees vs. rebates
Most credit card companies, which offer credit card rebates have an annual fee to offset the profit made. This can substantially eat into any savings made through a rebate scheme. This is why it is important to compare credit cards before settling for any rebate option. If the annual fees are more than what you can earn in the rebates then do not opt for the card. Reward credit cards may also have a higher APR than other cards.

Partial payments
If you are making partial payments on the credit card outstanding amounts each month then interests accumulated can affect the credit card rebates earned. Due to high interest rates the cost of interest if your not making full repayments each month is likely to very quickly exceed the value of any rewards.

Specific locations and outlets

Depending on where the credit card rebates are applicable and where you can earn the maximum points, you should use the credit card in those locations primarily. In this manner, you can hope to earn maximum rebate in the shortest time. Merchant gift card purchases help you earn substantial credit card rebates. You can use the gift card for future purchases or even give it away as a gift!

Keeping track of your Rebates
You can easily keep track of the amount of credit card rebates earned by seeing the statistics online. You can log on to your online bank account and check how much you have spent and rebate earned on the credit card. This way, you can be updated on the exact credit card rebates earned.
