If you’ve gotten really behind in your bills you might be dealing with debt collectors calling. Even though we have to take care of our bills, we do not have to be subjected to a lot of the downright disgusting tactics that some debt collection agencies resort to. You can beat debt collectors at their own game and stop debt collectors in their tracks.
Even though many legitimate debt collection agencies are respectful of their clients, too many of them resort to intimidation, threats, and debt collector harassment. They pester you. They never leave you alone. And some of their tactics are so sneaky and sleazy they can bring you to tears.
However, you can turn the tables on them. You can fight back.
Here are a couple of things you might want to consider doing.
The number one thing is that there is no need to put up with harassment.
You can tel them that they must communicate with you in writing. This will give you their name, address and phone number.
You can use that information to research their company. You want to see if they are a legitimate debt collection agency. If they are not you can report them – you can certainly stop debt collectors if they are taking illegal actions.
It’s also important to get this information because then you will have things in writing should you end up going to court.
The most important thing is not to give them any of your personal financial information over the phone. If they start to pressure you and demand the information tell them to put their request in writing and send it to you.
And if they don’t stop pressuring you just hang up on them.
Now, if you use a cellular phone, why not add their phone number to your reject list? Why would you want to talk to such jerks?
And what’s even more of a problem is that they can be a lot worse than just being jerks. They could be outright thieves who have gotten hold of your phone number and account information. It could be a slimy debt collection agency that will take money out of your account with or without your authorization if you give them the information they are telling you to give them.
It bears repeating: never give out personal information to debt collecors over the phone.
